MIA: Flight Attendant Fashions

Wow, I forgot how flight attendants used to dress. I think the problem with current airlines is the fashion mistakes they are forcing their employees to make. Come on, lets bring some fashion to the sky! I would like to see some fashion wars much like the price wars they always get into.
Flight Attendant
1970s: Southwest Airlines experiences a dramatic jump in ticket sales when its flight attendants start wearing white go-go boots and hot pants. The airline adopts a new motto to match (”Sex sells seats”) and begins serving in-flight drinks with names like Passion Punch and Love Potion. Not to be outdone, TWA follows suit in 1971, sending its attendants into the air wearing Valentino-designed hot pants.

Can you imagine a fashion battle of the sky’s? What airline do you think would win?

don’t get me wrong, I love fashion. but fashion is one thing, demeaning your female employees by making them wear sexually suggestive uniforms to sell seats is quite another.

Political correctness has won out! Last time I saw a good looking stewardess was in 1994.

i guess fashion that doesn’t necessarily mean showing off too much skin will do. like in our country, where the reputation of some flight attendants are not very much appreciated, they should dress up appropriately…more businesslike…or perhaps dress up in clothes that could show something about the airline they belong to…but of course, with a sense of fashion.

I am a flight attendant for southwest airlines and although we don’t wear hot pants anymore i am very pleased with our uniforms. they are more made for men but they are comfortable and if an emergency should arise (though highly unlikely seeing as SWA has the best record in the US) we can get what needs to be done in tennis shoes and khaki pants/shorts… versus wearing healed boots of heels of anykind.

IT’s great to have hot girls to look at while your on a four hour flight. But give me a break, this is the real world. They’re flight attendants not back up dancers.

Now American flight attendants are old, fat and have mustaches, yyyuukkk!!!

This is a nice picture, but what are they supposed to serve the passengers in that clothes? Someone remind me, please: What is the exact purpose of a flight attendant?

“how sex is more degrading than coal mining?”

“American flight attendants are old, fat and have mustaches”

No, but oddly enough most coal miners are.

Ok. One question that came to my mind while reading this. Why is it such a big deal for someone to dress that way at work when they dress exactly that way to do everyday things such as going to the grocery store or doing other everyday things. I mean all the women I know, including myself, wish we could dress like that at work. I mean at least to me, when guys look at me that way it’s like a self-esteem boost. It makes you feel like a woman…makes you feel sexy even. People can think what they want but honestly….look at how people dress these days and how people dressed then. For them it was ordinary to wear that. Kind of like casual Fridays except…everyday.

If I were working as a flight attendant I’d have no problem wearing that! I think its super cute and fun!!

We are so politically correct these days in America. This would not work today.

Even with all the sexual imagery in the media, you don’t see it in real life compared to Europe and Latin America. Why are we so sensitive about this!

Beauty is too be appreciated ! Flight attendants are all visually boring these days…

I am in training to be a flight attendant and I can only wish that my new uniforms could be this cute!! I agree that they rae super cute and fun! When I normally fly I like to get all dressed up…. but soon I’ll have to be all covered up! Boo!

The problem is the 20 something girls that wore those outfits in the early 70’s are the same flight attendants now in their 50’s to 60’s that are working today….. All the young cute girls today are smart enough not to come anywhere near the crappy lifestyle that has beset the crewmembers of the airlines….

Trust me, given the average waist and ass size of most of the flight attendants that I see in the air today, the airlines are doing everyone a HUGE favor by keeping them as covered up as possible. They put the moooooooo back in muumuu.

I find it entersting that the flight attendance are now fashion police for SouthWest Airlines. Ther has been another woman that had to cover up so that she could fly, but as Billy Bob says about how they look now.., I beleive it is mostly jeleousy.

So long as the job description of a flight attendant is to attend to the practical needs of passengers, not fuel their fantasies, the whining about sexiness and physique is misplaced. Most people reading this blog are not, this very day, so cute as the stewardess in the go-go boots photo, and would be outraged if their industry suddenly demanded such an appearance as a qualification for doing good work. Models are paid to be pretty. Airline employees are not. Bovine references are immature and inappropriate.

I agree with the general idea that modern uniforms could stand to be more stylish. My former roommate was a CSA, not a flight attendant, but the sins she was forced to commit against fashion were truly heinous (and expensive!). Surely there must be some room, within the heels-of-one-inch micromanaged restrictions on wardrobe, for someone to design a uniform of which an employee might say “this is nice.” Stylishness and sexiness are not synonymous. It should be entirely possible for flight attendants’ uniforms to be professional, practical, AND appealing.

The primary function of a flight attendant is to insure passenger safety. It is NOT to serve drinks or snacks.
I say this with knowledge as I am a flight attendant.
I am female, not in my 20’s or 30’s. I am also NOT a cow..I work hard to stay trim and in shape but I would absolutely HATE to be required to wear hot pants to work. I believe my uniform with American is both professional in appearance AND feminine.

I have a question. Do you have to be bilingual to be a flight attendant? Oh yeah and I”m not way skinny anymore..but not obese either.

OK, sure those uniforms are really hot… But if Airlines started screening women and only hiring thin, attractive women again like they used to in the 70s, then everyone would be up in arms! I like to think of America as an equal opportunity country and refusing to hire someone based on their looks as opposed to their qualifications, well I don’t think I’d be too happy about that.
On another note… I DO agree that airlines should give their attendants more room with the dress code… If you FEEL attractive, it makes you look more attractive and I haven’t ever seen an airline attendant feel attractive in one of the uniforms they are wearing these days.

As mentioned in a previous comment, I also find it ironic that Southwest flight attendants now actually kick paying customers off their flights if they feel their attire is too “suggestive”.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a decent looking flight attendant. Come on airlines…Get rid of the fatty’s and the hags. Here’s my suggestion. Make our seats wider and the aisles thinner. It will give everyone (passengers and flight attendants) a reason to get off their rear ends, exercise, and stop stuffing their faces at Cinnabon before getting on thew next flight.

all1line asked, “What is the exact purpose of a flight attendant?”

And I’m not being sarcastic here: Give me my bag of peanuts and a ginger ale. Even better when its accompanied by a pretty smile from an attractive attendant who also is well trained on the safety requirements of the airline. Reality is this: the job is 95% handing out snacks, beverages, pillows and hospitality and about 5% playing the roll of lifeguard. I’ve been on a lot of flights in my lifetime and the only thing flight attendants have ever really done for my safety is to demonstrate the proper method of using my seatbelt and making sure my seat back is in its full and upright position.

What’s next? Should Hooters restaurants start hiring girls who are CPR certified and can administer the heimlich maneuver over those who actually look good in tight fitting shorts and a half top.

I would like to apologize to Cinnabon for my previous comment. Wow, those things are delicious and tough to resist. Its my favorite place in malls and airports to just ‘walk right by’. That’s right…I said “Walk right by.” Its called will power people….use it!

Regarding all the men that have posted comments: you are proof that anonymity turns completely considerate people into absolute jerks. I am totally confident that the reason you’re so anti-woman is because the women you’re insulting here, would never, ever condescend to give you a second look if you hit on them as they tried to simply do their job as flight attendant. Sorry, boys.

The outfits are okay, but those boots are from nowhere. The idea for boots is nice, but how about something more attractive and stylish in leather or vinyl?

the american flight attendants spend most of their time
in the back of the plane talking with each other and
ignoreing the passengers. for the most part they look
ruff.like lunch room ladies. JAL flight attendants are
hot. most asian airlines have attractive attendants.
